Speed Up BT Downloads

Note that there is no guarantee your BT download speed is necessarily enhanced after changing the settings below. You are welcome to share your personal experience and suggestions on how to enhance the BT download speed of QNAP NAS on this forum.

1. Enter the correct DNS settings in NAS
The DNS settings are provided by your ISP. Make sure the IP address is an external IP for network connection, not the virtual IP.

2. Check the NAT settings
If there is an NAT router between you NAS and the Internet, make sure the ports for BT download are opened. You can do this by the following two ways:
a. Automatic port forwarding: Enable the UPnP port forwarding function on NAS and the router.
b. Manual port forwarding: If your router does not support UPnP, open the ports for BT download on your router manually. The default ports for BT Station of NAS are 6881-6899.

3. For Windows XP users only: Configure your Windows XP firewall (ICF: Internet Connection Firewall)
a. Configure ICF in Windows XP SP1
Open Network Connections. Right click on your Internet connection or LAN connection and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab. If the Internet Connection Firewall option is checked, continue with the following steps:

1. Click Settings.
2. Press Add on the Services tab.
3. Enter a description of the service, e.g. BT.
4. Enter the name of IP of the computer hosting this service on your network. Enter 127.0.0.1, which means the local machine.
5. Enter the internal port number: 6881.
6. Enter the external port number: 6881.
7. Select TCP from the option TCP/UDP.
8. Press "OK".
9. Repeat the above steps to enter other ports, e.g., 6882-6899.

4. For Windows XP users only: Configure your Windows XP firewall (ICF: Internet Connection Firewall)

1. Go to Control Panel in Windows and select Security Centre.
2. In the Manage security settings for: section, click Windows Firewall.
3. If the Firewall is turned on, click on the Exceptions tab.
4. Click Add Port.
5. Enter a name for the service, e.g. BT.
6. Enter the port number for the service, e.g. 6881.
7. Select TCP.
8. Click "OK".
9. Repeat the above steps to enter other ports, e.g., 6882-6899.

5. Limit the number of download tasks and your upload rate
Try to limit the number of concurrent download tasks to 3 or less. If you are using ADSL, it is recommended to set the BT upload rate as below:
ADSL upload bandwidth: BT upload rate (suggested)

• 256K: 10-15KB
• 512K: 25-30KB
• 640K: 35-40KB
• 1M: 50-60KB

After changing the settings, leave the download tasks running for about 15 minutes to check the speed. In some cases, you may have to stop and restart the download tasks (torrents). If that does not work, you may try other torrents with more seeds or peers.

Some ISPs may control the bandwidth allocated to BT traffic using the default BT ports (6881-6899). This restricts the BT download performance of your NAS and you may need to assign different ports for the download service.
