Firmware is a kind of software which controls the operation of a computer at a basic level. It is intended to evoke a middle ground between Hardware and Software.

In QNAP NAS devices, firmware refers to the operating system which controls the NAS device. This is in contrast to applications software which runs on NAS device to do useful things. For example, a music media player would be applications software.
